Course Structure
The Bachelor of Music features a common first year experience which focuses on
- performance skills
- historical, theoretical and contextual studies
- aural studies
- applied music skills.
From second year, the focus of studies can stay heavily performance based or may shift to composition or musicology/ ethnomusicology.
All students will be encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to spend a semester studying abroad in their third year, or to take a 'capstone' subject networking them into the music profession through a semester of work placement.
While students have the option of an exit point after 3 years, many students will proceed into a fourth year of highly specialised music-only study, to graduate with the degree of Bachelor of Music with Honours.
All students will take a non-music breadth subject in each semester of their undergraduate degree. Students will be directed towards subjects in disciplines that enhance their opportunities for a career in music and provide a breadth of knowledge of the contemporary world in combination with depth of competency in their chosen music specialisation.
The Bachelor of Music can also be studied sequentially with another degree. In a 5 year time commitment, students can qualify for two bachelor degrees, graduating with (for example) a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Science.
