Careers
Career opportunities for BMus students range widely, from professional solo and ensemble performances to music administration, classroom and studio teaching to music journalism.
Common career options from a Bachelor of Music degree include performer, music administrator, concert agent, music wholesaler or retailer, music teacher in private or secondary school, music therapist, music researcher, accompanist, music tutor/lecturer, studio teacher, audio technician, concert manager, producer's assistant, and music critic/reviewer.
Qualified music teachers are in demand in both government and private schools to teach general class music and to organise and teach in instrumental music programs. Appropriately qualified instrumental teachers have little trouble building a practice, especially those using new technology to assist in aural/theory training and creative music-making.
Music therapy graduates gain secure employment working with patients/clients in special schools, hospitals, nursing homes, community centres and clinics.
Careers for composers and music researchers are very competitive and generally, are built over many years. Most supplement their income by teaching, mainly in tertiary institutions, or acting as critics or journalists for the media.
